Birth control questions
Can foreigners get birth control in Korea?
Yes. Visitors and residents can see our female OB/GYN specialist for contraception advice, IUD and implant insertion, and prescriptions. You can book and ask questions in English on WhatsApp.
Do I need a prescription for the morning-after pill in Korea?
Yes. Emergency contraception is prescription-only in Korea, so you need to see a doctor. It works best the sooner it is taken, so message us as soon as possible after unprotected sex.
What is the difference between Mirena, Jaydess and Kyleena?
All three are hormonal IUDs. Mirena contains 52 mg of levonorgestrel and lasts 5 years; Kyleena contains 19.5 mg and lasts 5 years; Jaydess contains 13.5 mg and lasts 3 years. Jaydess and Kyleena are slimmer than Mirena.
When is the best time to insert an IUD or implant?
Just after your period is usually recommended. The doctor confirms timing and checks that you are not pregnant before insertion.
Does IUD insertion need anesthesia?
Hormonal IUD insertion takes about 10 minutes and usually needs no anesthesia. Implant (Implanon) insertion is done under local anesthesia in about 10 minutes.
Can a hormonal IUD help with heavy or painful periods?
Yes. A hormonal IUD such as Mirena can reduce the amount and length of bleeding and period pain, so it is also used as a treatment for these symptoms.
How is the implant removed?
The doctor locates the implant, numbs the skin, makes a small 2 mm opening and removes it with fine forceps. Fertility returns soon after removal.
